According
to Nigerian High Commission in South Africa, about N21million has been lost by
Nigerians to the wave of xenophobic attacks and unwarranted killings of foreign
immigrants in South Africa. Nigerian High Commissioner to South Africa,Uche
Ajulu-Okeke on Saturday made the revelation in Johannesburg, South Africa
through phone conservation with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
The
envoy highlighted the material lost to include looted shops, burnt shops, two
burnt mechanic shops, eleven cars burnt cars and two stolen cars among others while
the human cost were two or three Nigerians who were wounded during the attacks
in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal Province has been treated and discharged from the
hospital.
“So
far Nigerians had lost more than 1.2million Rand about 21million naira to the
xenophobia unrest and this cost will be sent to the Federal Government” The High
Commissioner disclosed.
The
renewed attacks on foreigners by their host began when the Zulu King, HRM Goodwill
Boto Zwelithinni instructed African immigrants in South Africa to leave the country
and go home. The statement he has denied saying he has been misquoted and to
douse the tension he has appealed to South Africans to love and protect
foreign nationals within their communities.
