US Defense Secretary, Ash
Carter on Tuesday revealed that the U.S. military is sending 250 tanks, Bradley
armored fighting vehicles and self-propelled howitzers to her allies in the
Baltics and Eastern Europe as response to perceived Russian meddling in the
Ukraine crisis.
According to Carter at a press
conference with U.S allies in Estonia, the military hard wares and other equipment
will be stationed in the Eastern Europe countries of Estonia, Lithuania,
Latvia, Bulgaria, Romania and Poland.
He disclosed further that the
equipment were to be moved around Europe for training and exercises aimed at
ensure regional security in the Eastern Europe in view of Russia’s military
muscle flexing.
To further ensure regional
security, Carter equally disclosed that Washington and its NATO allies will
work at boosting cyber defense activities. “We must prepare NATO and our allies
for cyber challenges, particularly from Russia. We need to explain to those who
doubt the value of our NATO commitments that the security of Europe is vital to
everything else we hold dear”. Carter said.
As its always the norm, Russia
will not treat this US deployment with kid gloves as one action in the past has
always necessitated the reaction of the other in Ukrainian feud. For instance,
on Monday, the US Defense Chief (Carter) reacted to a statement credited to the
Russian President Vladimir Putin a day before announcing the addition of 40 intercontinental
ballistic missiles to Russia’s nuclear arsenal.
While making a reference to
Putin’s statement, Carter noted the announcement reflected posturing on the
part of Russian President.
